WHY W(h)INE?

Growing up as a Christian in the early 70s and 80s you often get to hear personal testimonies in the churches, of individuals who became Christians and overcame their three worst sins – smoking, drinking and seeing films! I know that since mid-90s there is a change in the list. Seeing films is no more part of the top sins one need to overcome as a sincere Christian, because unlike in those days when you had to go to a theatre to watch a movie (where the chances of you getting caught in sin were high), these days you have it played in your house. So its no more a top sin. (Poor God! We just re-wrote His list of sins)! 🙂

I’m sick and tired of this wide-spread pseudo-spirituality that often glorifies the inconsequential and nullifies the essential! We are taught to live a life of lie – full of needless guilt, fear and shame. And what angers me the most is the fact that most of the time it is based on foolish interpretations and false teachings.

As the title suggests, in this article I am going to discuss one such “man-made sin” – the ‘sin’ of DRINKING. Like with other issues that I have dealt, I am going to expose here how some careless interpretations of the Bible have resulted in portraying “drinking” as a devilish act! The knowledge of truth will really set you free!! I know that many will criticize me for coming out with this. But I had to find the truth and expose it! I invite you to join me as I pass through The Book wine-hunting and party-hopping!

DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN WINE AND GRAPE JUICE

I have seen preachers standing on their heads trying to convince their listeners that the “wine” Jesus provided for the wedding in Cana, was a non-alcoholic grape juice. And most of their listeners shake their empty heads in united agreement. But, since the Bible itself says that knowledge will increase in the last days, it is important that what is taught from it makes sense.

For the kind information of those preachers, the word used in John 2, is “wine” and not “grape juice”. Oh, you think they are the same? Wait. Let me distinguish them for you. Please read these two verses:

1) Gen 40:11 – Fresh grape juice served to Pharaoh by the Chief Butler.

2) Neh 2:1 – Wine served to Artaxerxes by Nehemiah.

The Oxford Dictionary classifies “wine” as an alcoholic drink made from fermented grape juice. And for those of you who do not know, “fermentation” is a process by which sugar is converted into ethyl alcohol as a result of chemical breakdown of micro-organisms in beers, wines and spirits.

Since the Oxford Dictionary is not “God-inspired” and since the Bible-centered, Greek-seeking saints wouldnt settle for anything less, let me go Greek: the Greek word used there for “wine” is ‘oinos’ – A primary word (or perhaps of Hebrew origin); “wine” (literally or figuratively): – wine. The Hebrew origin word is ‘yayin’, which means “effervesce; wine (as fermented); by implication intoxication: – banqueting, wine”. (Hope you have ignored the word “intoxication” found inbetween, because it means to cause (someone) to lose control of their faculties)! 🙂

The same word “yayin” is used in the below verse where the Lord is compared to a drunken man awaking from his sleep, shouting with joy: Psa 78:65 – “Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine”. The Hebrew word used here for “shouteth” is ‘ranan’ which generally means to ‘shout joyfully’. So if “wine” was just a grape juice then isn’t God’s reaction compared to someone’s who is very clearly overacting??!!!! 😀

When Jesus was on this earth, he was called a “winebibber” – ‘drunkard’ of wine. And there seems to be some fire behind that smoke as the below verses would prove! When it came to “wine”, Jesus was not naïve. He made it amply clear that he knew a thing or two about wine when he said, “No man also having drunk OLD WINE straightaway desireth new. For he saith, The old is better” (Luke 5:39). The term “old wine” is the key. It very clearly distinguishes itself from the normal “grape juice wine” concept the preachers are desperately trying to portray – because there is nothing called ‘old grape juice’ :-p :-D!! And what did Jesus mean by “the old is better”?? Oh, unless you drink it you won’t have a clue!!

At the wedding in Cana, after tasting the newly served wine, the MC said, “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have WELL DRUNK, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now” (John 2:10). These words convey a lot… We can understand that the wine that Jesus provided was of a better quality than the “good wine” that was served first. We can also understand that people usually get “WELL DRUNK” by the “good wine” served initially, and they then go on to drink “that which is worse”, served later (and this was obviously done by the hosts to take advantage of the guests’ altered state of mind). And more importantly, the Greek word used there for “drunk” is ‘methuo’, which means – to drink to intoxication, that is, get drunk: – drink well, make (be) drunk (-en). If you missed it, ‘methuo’ means to drink till you are intoxicated. And, come on, you know what intoxication means, don’t you?!!

SO, THE VERDICT IS OUT AND CLEAR: IT WAS NOT AN ORDINARY GRAPE JUICE, BUT A FERMENTED “ALCOHOLIC DRINK” THAT JESUS PROVIDED FOR THE WEDDING AT CANA – WHICH WAS BETTER THAN THE “GOOD” ONE SERVED EARLIER!!

If I were in Jesus’ place and I knew that drinking was a sin then I wouldn’t have been attending any such weddings in the first place (Infact, I know there are many holier saints who wouldn’t attend such parties or functions even today)! Even if I had to, I would have left much before people started drinking. But look at Jesus! He not only stayed back while others were getting drunk, but he provided more wine to those who were already drunk (Something you wont do if you believed in moderate drinking)!!

I would have asked the servants of the house to fill those empty pots with water and have it poured over the heads of all those drunkards! Infact, Jesus could have used the whip here. Lo, he didn’t! Compared to the high standards of spirituality set by his saints, he seems to be way off the mark!! Way off…! Poor Jesus!!!

Isn’t it interesting to note that the first recorded miracle of Jesus happens to be the provision of “good wine” at a wedding party and that he signs off his last and most important earthly task (the death on the cross) with some “strong wine”?!!

WHAT DRINK DID JESUS DENY BEFORE HIS CRUCIFIXION, AND WHY?

In Matthew 27:34, before Jesus was crucified – “They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink”. And in John 19:30, we see: “When Jesus thereof had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished”. (When he said “It is finished”, he was obviously referring to the “Mission Accomplished” and not the vinegar that was served!). “Vinegar” or “sour wine” (‘oxos’ in Greek), is a sour-tasting liquid containing acetic acid, obtained by fermenting dilute alcoholic liquids, typically wine, cider, or beer. IT IS STRONGER THAN WINE. And “gall”, is believed to be a narcotic substance called Opium, derived from Poppy plants, found in abundance in Arabic countries and used as an analgesic (pain reliever).

When “gall” is mixed with “vinegar” (it is narcotic drugs mixed with alcohol), it becomes a heady mixture of highly intoxicating cocktail that effects the nervous system in such a way that the person does not feel much pain. During those days, this ‘heady cocktail’ was usually given to a person who was about to be crucified. Jesus refused to take this drink just before his crucifixion because he wanted to experience every bit of the pain that came his way! And as we see in John 19:30, he took the vinegar (without the gall), only moments before he died. And it was more out of thirst (vr 28) than anything else.

When Paul was dealing with the problems in Corinth regarding the ‘Agape Feast’, he said, “one is hungry, and another is drunken” (1 Cor 11:21). The Greek word used here for “drunken” is ‘methuo’. The same word used in John 2, mentioned above. YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW GREEK TO UNDERSTAND THAT ONE CANNOT GET “METHUO” BY GRAPE JUICE. So what was it that the believers drank in the church during the ‘Agape Feast’ that left some of them drunk? Intoxicating Wine?!! God forbid!!!

EATING, DRINKING AND BEING MERRY

The Bible very clearly portrays wine as a drink that makes the heart glad (Ps 104:15/ Ecc 10:19). A normal grape juice would not produce that result. And based on Prov 17:22“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine” – we can conclude that WINE IS A SUPERB HEALTH DRINK…!!!

On 16th Jan 2010, Times of India’s Bangalore Times, carried a NewsAd (Pg 6) titled “Wine for health”. In it they have quoted researchers at Britain’s Reading University suggesting that blue grapes are the best variety of fruit that can be consumed as wine as it (believe it or not) reduces cholesterol in the body and keeps the human heart healthy by facilitating blood circulation!!!

There is no better verse than Judges 9:13, that portrays the value and purpose of this health drink – “And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my vine, which cheereth God and man…?”. This ofcourse is a figurative speech used here by a desperate Jotham, but it is based on facts he has known from the life around him. Is it possible for us to know what he has known? We just need to study the drinking and feasting habits of men and women mentioned in the Bible.

In the three ‘lost and found’ parables that Jesus said in Luke 15, the first two he started by saying “who among you…?” and then added “likewise” to compare our joy with the joy in heaven. The man who found one lost sheep invited his friends to enjoy with him and the woman who found one lost penny did likewise. It seems as if they were just waiting for an excuse to share their joy with others (atleast that’s how Jesus liked to convey that situation)!!

But in the third parable, he neither said “who among you…?” nor “likewise”, clearly portraying that he is directly referring to God’s love and care towards us. If so, then that parable reveals God’s heart.  When the Prodigal Son came back, his father said to the elder son: “It was meet that we should MAKE MERRY, AND BE GLAD: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again” (Luke 15:32). The father was so eager to “make merry and be glad” that he did not even wait for his elder son to come home!

CHECK OUT THE BIBLE “PARTIES”

BACHELOR PARTY: Judges 14:10“So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do”.

BIRTHDAY PARTY: Job 1:4“And his sons went and feasted in their houses, everyone his day”. The last phrase makes it more likely a birth day than any other day. (Yes, for a child of God every day is equally important, but its just that some days are more special – like the “birthday” or “wedding anniversary”)!!

COMING OF AGE PARTY: Genesis 21:8“And the child grew and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast”.

FRIENDSHIP PARTY: Genesis 26:30“And he (Isaac) made them a feast, and they did eat and drink”.  2Samuel 3:20: “So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast”.

WEDDING PARTY: Genesis 29:21“And Jacob said unto Laban, give me my wife… 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast”.

ROYAL PARTY: 1 Kings 3:15“And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem… and made a feast to all his servants”.

HAPPY FEASTING

I always used to wonder why the modern day saints find it difficult to just have a good time until I read Prov 15:15“He that is of a MERRY HEART hath a CONTINUAL FEAST!!! It’s just not everyone’s ‘glass of wine’. You need to have a happy disposition to enjoy special moments!! 🙂

According to Oxford Dictionary, a Feast means a large celebratory meal, an annual religious celebration or a DEDICATED DAY. From Exodus 23:14, we can understand that it was the Lord who taught the Israelites to feast. He says: “Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in a year”. And what did he want them to do in a feast? He said: “And thou shalt rejoice in my feast” (Deut 16:14). Why? Because “A feast is made for laughter” (Ecc 10:19).

CHECK OUT THESE MEN OF GOD MAKING MERRY:

JOSEPH – Genesis 43:34“And THEY DRANK, and were merry with”.

A LEVITEJudges 19:21“So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and DID EAT AND DRINK. 22 Now AS THEY WERE MAKING THEIR HEARTS MERRY…”.

BOAZ Ruth 3:7“And when Boaz had EATEN AND DRUNK, and his HEART WAS MERRY”.

DANIELDaniel 10:3“I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor WINE IN MY MOUTH, neither did I anoint myself at all, TILL THREE WHOLE weeks were fulfilled”. Daniel had stopped having bread, meat and wine for three weeks. This obviously means that he did have them the other times. Note: bread and meat were also avoided – not just the wine.

NEHEMIAH Nehemiah 8:10“Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and DRINK THE SWEET, for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry”. 12 “And all the people went their way to EAT, AND TO DRINK, and to send portions, and TO MAKE GREAT MIRTH, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them”.

JEREMIAH Jeremiah 35:2“Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them INTO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, into one of the chambers, and GIVE THEM WINE to drink”. 5 “And I, set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites POTS FULL OF WINE, AND CUPS, and I said unto them, DRINK YE WINE”. This is very interesting. The Lord wanted Jeremiah to call the Rechabites for a drink in “the house of the Lord” not to highlight their abstinence from drinking, but to show how dedicated they were to their father’s command! Based on my spiritual upbringing… God’s choice of place was very wrong!!

In 1 Kings 4:20, we see written: “Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry”. This verse portrays the blessedness of Israel under the reign of Solomon. The Lord seems to have taught the Israelites all the wrong things. “Eating and drinking and making merry”??!!  If we were to re-write this verse according to our holy standards, it would have been, “Brethren and Baptist were few, as water in a parched dessert, teaching and preaching, and always grumpy”!!!

In the book of Esther we see the introduction of a feast called Adar to commemorate the redemption of Jews from their enemies and their turning of sorrow into joy. Esther 9:22“As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor”. It was a day of rest, feasting, happiness and giving gifts. Much like the festival of Diwali in India!

Unlike our church picnics, where we have church-like gatherings, the Israelites enjoyed themselves during their feasts. They just made merry because that was what the lord wanted them to do! (Based on my Christian upbringing, God does not seem to be spiritual at all – He wants His children to drink and enjoy?? I feel so much holier)!!!

LADIES TOO, PLEASE!

(Pic courtesy: bbc.com)

Even in today’s secular standards, a woman who drinks has to be a devil woman. And based on the high spiritual standards of latter day saints, such woman should surely be put to death! But the incidents mentioned in the verses below prove that such was not the case during Biblical times. Even the so-called spiritual women of the Bible are shown to have drunk wine and strong drinks!

SAMSON’S MOTHERJudges 13:7“But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and NOW DRINK NO WINE NOR STRONG DRINK, neither eat any unclean thing”.

RUTHRuth 2:14“And Boaz said unto her… eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the VINEGAR …and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left”

HANNAH1 Samuel 1:9“So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had DRUNK”. Her response in vr 15 seems to be contradicting this fact. Hence, open for debate. But that does not take away the fact that Elkanah’s wife Peninnah would have drunk.

JOB’S DAUGHTERSJob 1:13“And there was a day when his SONS AND DAUGHTERS were eating and DRINKING WINE in their eldest brother’s house”.  That’s nice. Brothers and sisters drinking wine together!

AGED WOMENTitus 2:3“The aged women likewise …not given to MUCH WINE”. (Women drank even in the ‘NT’ period)!

In Judges 13, we see an angel of the Lord telling Manoah’s wife that she should abstain from wine and strong drink as she was going to have a Nazarite child. Nazarites are those who dedicate a period of their lives in abstinence from basic pleasures of life for various reasons. (People from south India can easily identify with their practices as the “Aiyyappa devotees” indulge in almost very similar practices every year).  One of the main abstinence was of drinking wine: Numbers 6:3“He shall SEPARATE HIMSELF FROM WINE AND STRONG DRINK”.   As if that was the most important abstinence, the verse where it talks about how a Nazarite can break his vow, the first thing mentioned there is wine: Numbers 6:20“and after that the Nazarite MAY DRINK WINE”.

EVEN THE PRIESTS!!

THE LORD HAD ALLOWED EVEN THE LEVITES TO DRINK WINE OR STRONG DRINKS. But there was only one restriction – no drinking while on duty! A Levite could not have wine or strong drink when he enters into the tabernacle. Leviticus 10:9“Do not drink WINE nor STRONG DRINK, thou, nor thy sons with thee, WHEN ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die”. Ezekiel 44:21“Neither shall any priest drink wine, WHEN they enter into the inner court”. The “when” makes it very clear that they were otherwise free to have wine or strong drink.

GIFT ME A BOTTLE OF WINE PLEASE

In today’s corporate world, executives often gift each other wine bottles. Discussion made over a drink often ends with a positive result. But imagine that a man of God is coming to see you and he opens his bag telling you that he has brought a gift for you and then he pulls out a bottle of wine and gives it to you. What would your impression about this man’s godliness be? Well, the Bible foolishly reveals that some Men of God did gift wine bottles!!

ABRAHAM TO MELCHIZEDEK Genesis 14:18“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and WINE: and he was the priest of the most high God”.

HANNAH TO ELI1 Samuel 1:24“And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, AND A BOTTLE OF WINE, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young”.

JESSE TO SAUL1 Samuel 16:20“And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and A BOTTLE OF WINE, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

ISRAELITES TO LORDNumbers 28:7“in the HOLY PLACE shalt thou cause the STRONG WINE to be poured unto the LORD for a DRINK OFFERING”. This is an ultimate verse! The Lord wanted a “strong wine” to be offered unto him in the holy place as an offering! Ordinary wine wont do?!!

WINE A BLESSING

Wine was not only a good gift to give, it was also a good blessing to give! Please don’t forget, this was done because Wine was considered as a drink that makes the heart of God and men glad!

Genesis 27:28“Therefore God gave thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and PLENTY OF corn and WINE”.

Genesis 49:12“His eyes shall be RED WITH WINE, and his teeth white with milk”.

Isaiah 62:9“But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD; and they that have brought it together SHALL DRINK IT IN THE COURTS OF MY HOLINESS”.

Ecclesiastes 8:15“Then I COMMENDED MIRTH, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to EAT, AND TO DRINK, AND TO BE MERRY: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun”. (also 2:243:135:18).

CAFFEINE AND NICOTINE VERSES BARLEY AND GRAPES

It may be hard for the Saints of God to accept this at first, but the fact is that a limited measure of Beer and Wine is healthy for the body, but the same measure of tea or coffee does more harm to the body! Now this is a scientifically proven fact. A study has found that both nicotine and caffeine, found in tea, coffee, colas and some chocolates are intoxicants that constrict the blood vessels and thus inhibit the blood flow in our bodies. Caffeine is a crystalline compound found in tea and coffee plants and is a stimulant of the central nervous system, while Nicotine is a toxic (poisonous) oily liquid.

On 6th Dec 2009, The Hindu supplement carried an article with the tag line: “Unwitting addictions to seemingly harmless substances like tea and coffee can make our life a roller coaster ride”. The writer, Nutrition & Health researcher, Meeta Lal, says that the inherent appeal of the most popular “pick-me-ups”, candies, chocolates and sugar, is that it supplies “happy messengers” to the brain, albeit temporarily. The second most widely used “pick-me-up”, Caffeine, is a brain-active drug found not only in coffee, but also in chocolate, sodas and teas. Chocolates contain both sugar and caffeine.

She says, “Most of the time, we are not aware that we are ‘stressed’ and use sugar, caffeine, alcohol, etc to restore balance to our overstressed brain”. According to her, the urge to eat more chocolate and drink more cups of tea and coffee are similar to the urge to drink more alcohol. In other words, THE ADDICTION IS THE SAME! And just like how excessive alcohol can cause liver failures, excessive caffeine can affect the heart’s rhythm. She then concludes saying, “Continued use of pick-me-ups, even seemingly innocent ones like tea and coffee, makes our life a roller coaster ride: steep, fast and wild with rapid ups and downs!”

CAFFEINE-ADDICTED, WINE-HATTING SAINTS OF GOD

I used to wonder, if drinking tea or coffee is something that does more harm to the body than good and if people are drinking it more because they are addicted to it than because of its nutritional values, then how come they are thanking God before having it?! Infact, if drinking a limited amount of beer or wine was good for health, then why doesn’t anyone thank God before drinking them?!!

I started looking at 1 Cor 10:31 in a different light, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatever ye do, do all to the glory of God”! So, one day I decided to act on this new enlightenment. Once a few of us youngsters were about to start a session of drinking. Just before saying “Cheers” I said, Guys why don’t we say grace? Everyone paused in whatever positions they were and looked at me as if I had just said something very vulgar! Words like “What?”, “Seriously?”, “You kidding?”, “What ‘excreta’?”, etc., dropped out of their stunned mouths! They could not fathom the fact that you could actually thank God for a drink you are about to enjoy! I said, “If we can’t praise God for it then we shouldn’t be drinking it”.

I have known many Saints of God who are so addicted to tea and coffee that they get headaches or constipation if they don’t drink it on time! Yet, I have heard no one having a problem thanking their good Lord for it!! WHAT HYPOCRITES!!! They can thank God for that which “intoxicates” them and makes them addicted to it, but they hate those who drink Wine which according to the Bible even cheers up God!

This then prompts me to ask, “Is addiction wrong?”. If addiction is sin then we all are guilty…! According to the dictionary, addiction is one’s physical dependence on a particular substance, or mental devotion to a particular interest. This in itself cannot be construed as negative or wrong as we all are physically addicted to food and spiritually addicted to doing good (atleast we are supposed to). SO ADDICTION IN ITSELF IS NOT WRONG. IT IS WHAT YOU ARE ADDICTED TO, THAT MAKES IT RIGHT OR WRONG.

DRAWING THE LINE

So, if spiritually and scientifically drinking is not a ‘sin’, and if men and women of God did not have a problem with drinking or even gifting wine bottles to each other then what else could be a problem? The problem, if any, is in knowing how much is too much?

In Isaiah 5:11, we see God giving the strongest and probably the most direct warning against excessive drinking, “Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may FOLLOW strong drink; that CONTINUE TILL NIGHT, till wine inflame them!”. In vr 12, He goes on to tell the Israelites the problem He has with their drinking: vr 12 “And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, AND WINE, are in their feasts: BUT they regard not the work of the LORD”. As we can see, God did not have a problem with His children enjoying their feasts with music and wine, but with the fact that they did not regard His works while doing so.

As if to reiterate the warning given in Prov 23:29&30, the Public Health Minister, Mr Gillian Merron, in a survey conducted by the British Dept of Health, said, “Damage from REGULARLY DRINKING TOO MUCH can slowly creep up and you won’t see it until its too late” (courtesy BBC Online).

In the book titled “Foods that Harm Foods that Heal – An A-Z guide to safe and healthy eating”, published by Reader’s Digest, the authors have differentiated between heavy drinking and alcoholism. According to them, only 5 out of 100 heavy drinkers are alcoholics (!!!!). But, effects of prolonged misuse are the same for both. There is a constant reference to “prolonged abuse” and “excessive consumption” as reasons for various alcohol-related health hazards. SURPRISINGLY, ALL THROUGH THE BOOK, TEA, COFFEE AND COLAS ARE MENTIONED AS ITEMS THAT NEED TO BE CUT DOWN OR AVOIDED FOR MOST ILLNESSES!

On 7th Dec 2009, in Bangalore Times (supplement of Times of India), nutritionist, Lisa Sarah John, wrote that 60ml of whisky, rum, vodka or beer, roughly contains 150 calories (equal to 8 teaspoons of sugar!). While wine, which is relatively safer, contains 120 calories in 100ml. SHE GOES ON TO WRITE THAT RESEARCH HAS PROVED THAT A LITTLE AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL CONSUMED EVERYDAY IS GOOD FOR HEALTH AND THAT IT HELPS TO RELAX OR DE-STRESS, EVEN HELPING LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE. (The same though cannot be said about tea, coffee, colas and chocolates!). But, according to her, the biggest danger of alcohol is that very few people can have just one drink and stop at that. We can thus conclude that it is not the addiction to wine or strong drinks but the uncontrolled consumption of it that is sinful!

Many Caffeine-addicted Saints of God do not know this but the Bible is full of verses that very clearly states the above mentioned (Oh, yes. Even verses from the NT)!!

Deutronomy 21:20“And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and A DRUNKARD”. A child who was disobedient, a glutton and a drunkard was to be stoned to death because he is not only a burden to his family, but a negative influence in the society. (This verse also tells us that we have to teach our kids not to be gluttonous).

1 Samuel 1:14“And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be DRUNKEN? Put away thy wine from thee”.

Proverbs 20:1“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is DECEIVED thereby is not wise”. The Hebrew word for “Deceived” is ‘shagah’ which means to be LEAD ASTRAY through ignorance.

Proverbs 23:20“Be not among WINEBIBBERS; amoung riotous eaters of flesh: 21 For the DRUNKARD and the glutton shall come to poverty”.

Proverbs 23:29-35“They that TARRY LONG at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine”.

Ecclesiastes 2:3“I sought in mine heart to GIVE MYSELF UNTO WINE, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom”.

Isaiah 28:7“But they also have erred through wine, and strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are SWALLOWED UP of wine, they are OUT OF THE WAY through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment”. The priests could take wine and strong drinks when they were not on duty. But here we see that they crossed all their limits.

Matthew 24:49“and to eat and drink with the DRUNKEN”.

1 Corinthians 5:11“But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a …DRUNKARD …; with such a one not to eat”.

Ephesians 5:18“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is EXCESS”.

1 Timothy 3:3“Not GIVEN to wine”.

1 Timothy 3:8“Likewise must the deacons…, not given to MUCH WINE”.

1 Peter 4:3“For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles …EXCESS OF WINE”.

All these verses very clearly mark the “laxmanna rekha” – EXCESSIVE DRINKING!

EATING WELL IS NOT GLUTTONY

Unlike today’s listless preachers, Jesus knew what he was talking about when he said, “The son of man came eating and drinking” (Matt 11:19). In that same verse we see him confessing that his enemies called him a “glutton” and a “winebibber”. No one is called a “winebibber” for drinking water or grape juice. Jesus came “eating”*, but he was NOT a glutton. He came “drinking”, but he was NOT a drunkard (*compare with Prov 13:25)! THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PERSON WHO DRINKS AND A DRUNKARD IS AS DISTINCT AS THE ONE BETWEEN A PERSON WHO EATS AND A GLUTTON!!!

In Ruth 3:7, we read: “And when Boaz had eaten and DRUNK, and his HEART WAS MERRY…” (Have you Saints ever noticed that just the previous day, while dating Ruth, Boaz had offered her bread dipped in STRONG WINE??!!). When we compare it with 1 Samuel 25:26“And Nabal’s HEART WAS MERRY within him, for he was VERY DRUNKEN”, we get a better picture. Boaz and Nabal, both drank wine and their hearts were merry and they both slept. The only difference being: while Boaz was drunk, Nabal was “very drunk”. He did not come to his senses till the next morning (1 Samuel 25:37), while Boaz awoke in his senses in the middle of the night (Ruth 3:8-13)!

So, here’s the philosophy (let those who have brains understand): WHEN A MAN WHO EATS AND A MAN WHO DRINKS, CROSSES OVER FROM A LEVEL OF A SELF-CONTROLLED, NEED-BASED SATISFACTION, TO THAT OF AN UNCONTROLLED, GREED-BASED SATISFACTION, THEY BECOME A GLUTTON AND A DRUNKARD RESPECTIVELY. OTHERWISE NOT!

Dear friends, if you are not aspiring to become holier than God then I would like to point out a couple of verses to you that shows the heart of the Lord: Deutronomy 14:23-26“And thou shalt EAT BEFORE THE LORD thy God… the TITHE OF THY corn, of thy WINE… And thou shalt bestow that money FOR WHATSOEVER THY SOUL LUSTETH AFTER …for WINE, or for STRONG DRINK … and thou shalt rejoice, thou and thine household”. Like an old man longing to sit and enjoy watching his children and grandchildren have a good time in his house, the Lord wanted the children of Israel along with their families to drink wine and strong drink, and rejoice in his presence!!!

Emphasizing the fact that He does not change, God has revealed that he has similar desires concerning us in the coming world, too! In Isaiah 25:6&8 he says: “On this mountain (Zion) the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for ALL PEOPLES, a banquet of AGED WINE – the best of meats and the finest of wines. 8 The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces… The Lord has spoken” (NIV). We can get more insight on this when we compare it with what Jesus said in Matthew 26:20/Luke 22:30. THE WINE SURE DOES CHEER GOD AND MAN AND IT SEEMS THAT GOD WOULD LIKE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY THROUGHOUT ETERNITY!

You may ask me: Isn’t it anyway better not to touch these things? Why take a chance? I would like to ask in return: When you walk down the road, an out of control vehicle could hit and kill you. So, would you just sit at home and not take a chance going out? Oh, but what if you are sitting inside your house, and the earth quakes and the roof of your house falls on you and kills you? So, would you start living in a tent? No?? You mean your life is not that important for you? And you want me to believe that you can takes such risks with your life daily but you have a problem with drinking wine because you think its sinful?

A simple, everyday routine of eating can become a sin if done without self-control! So, should we stop eating then? “Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and DRINK THY WINE WITH A MERRY HEART; for God now accepteth thy works” (Ecc 9:7). “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink” (Col 2:16)!!!

With AMEN and CHEERS!

EARTH SHATTERING – retelling the ‘Creation’ Story as Never Before!

I am going to agree here (for the sake of argument) that God actually dictated EVERY word in the original Scriptures. I am even willing to agree (if you don’t mind) that God physically held the hands of those who COPIED the original manuscripts so they could do it without missing even a single punctuation… (See, I am willing to agree what most of you wouldn’t)!

But … (now, this is one big BUT!), since most Hebrew words have more than one meaning attached to it, how could those who translated from the copy-scripts decide which one of those words would have been the author’s original choice??? For example: the Hebrew word “Ruach” (translated as “Spirit”) can mean wind, breath, exhalation, life, anger, spirit: – air, blast, courage, mind, side, spiritual, tempest, vain, whirlwind…! With such variety of words at my disposal I could interpret Gen 1:2 – And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, as: And the ‘anger’ of God moved over the face of the waters!! Or Gen 6:3 – And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man as: And the Lord said, My ‘air’ shall not always strive with man…!!

Some words like “alah” in Hebrew, found in Gen 2:6 and is translated as “went up”, can even have opposite meanings: ascend, climb up or fall! HENCE NO ONE – EXCEPT GOD HIMSELF AND THE ORIGINAL WRITERS – CAN AUTHORITATIVELY ESTABLISH THE TRANSLATOR’S CHOICE OF A WORD AS RIGHT OR WRONG!!!!! “What about the ‘context’?”, you may ask. Well, isnt the context also made up of the choice of more such words, isnt it?!!

Another example (not just to rub it in, but also to get you into a nice ‘groove’ before giving you the jolt!): Gen 2:1– Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. With the variety of meanings each Hebrew word provides, I am going to translate this verse differently: Thus the “lofty” “nations” were “destroyed”, and all their “army”. And the seventh “time” God made “clean riddance” of his “cattle” which he “had become”; and he “celebrated” on the seventh “day” “over” all his work which he had “bruised”…!!!! 😀 Why Not?!

Got it…?! So Lets Get Down to Business

On the basis of what I have shown above and the backing of what I have learnt over the past few years, I am going to translate the Creation Story mentioned in Genesis in a way that it brings out what I feel is more likely what had happened. This has nothing to do with Judaist teachings. Infact, even the Jews will be “jolted” to see this! What you are going to read below is radical in the light of both Jewish and Christian teachings. Some of it is probably brought out for the first time within this group!! How then do I insist on this being a truer interpretation? Because, as you will realise when you read through, it straightens out almost all of the grey areas – those previously unanswerable questions! Let me remind you, I have only chosen words and meanings available in the lexicons. So, here we go….!

Lets start with Gen 1:1It is translated into English as: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. But in Hebrew it is: rê’shı̂yth – bârâ’ – ‘ĕlôhı̂ym – ‘êth – shâmayim – ‘êth – ‘erets.  And with the available Hebrew meanings for each word, this is how I translate it:

Gen 1:1-The gods first chose their heavenly places and their nations.

I’ve given below a break-up of the Hebrew words and its available meanings for this verse so that you know how I arrived at this translation:

rê’shı̂ythfirst, in place, time, order or rank (specifically a firstfruit): – beginning, chief (-est), first (-fruits, part, time), principal thing.

bârâ’ – (absolutely) to create; (qualified) to cut down (a wood), select, feed (as formative processes): – choose, create (creator), cut down, dispatch, do, make (fat).

‘ĕlôhı̂ymgods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative: – angels, X exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty.

‘êth – in the demonstrative sense of entity; properly self (but generally used to point out more definitely the object of a verb or preposition, even or namely): – (As such unrepresented in English.)

shâmayim – from an unused root meaning to be lofty; the sky (as aloft; the dual perhaps alluding to the visible arch in which the clouds move, as well as to the higher ether where the celestial bodies revolve): – air, X astrologer, heaven (-s).

‘êth – in the demonstrative sense of entity; properly self (but generally used to point out more definitely the object of a verb or preposition, even or namely) : – (As such unrepresented in English).

‘erets – From an unused root probably meaning to be firm; the earth (at large, or partitively a land): –  X common, country, earth, field, ground, land, X nations, way, + wilderness, world.

The word “Elohiym”, according to the lexicon normally means “gods” – not “God”! Up until Gen 2:4, the word Elohiym is used without any accompanying title or article. As you can see above, Elohiym can also mean judge, angel, mighty men or gods. When used alone, it can NEVER refer to the Almighty God. For example: Exo 18:11 – Now I know that the LORD (yehôvâh) is greater than all other gods (‘ĕlôhı̂ym).  Exo 12:12 – “and I will bring judgment on all the gods (‘ĕlôhı̂ym) of Egypt. I am the LORD (yehôvâh)”. Jos 22:22– The LORD (yehôvâh) God (‘êl) of gods (‘ĕlôhı̂ym).

If, as is commonly taught, the plurality of the word Elohiym refers to the Trinity of the Godhead, then Ex 18:11 should mean: Yehovah is greater than the Triune God! HENCE THE CLAIM THAT THE WORD “ELOHIYM”, BY ITS PLURALITY, REFERS TO THE “TRIUNE” GOD, IS SIMPLY ABSURD, TOTALLY NONSENSICAL AND AGAINST THE BASIC SENSE OF THE WORD! But, like in the verse below, when a specific title is used along with it, its meaning changes: Gen 2:4 – in the day that the LORD (yehôvâh) God (‘ĕlôhı̂ym) made the earth and the heavens…And this usage changes the creation story, too! (Keep reading).

But, isn’t it unscriptural to consider that “gods”, and not “Yehovah” as being instrumental in the creation event in Gen 1? Firstly, you need to understand who the Scriptures refer to as “gods”.  Just to help you in your thinking: HOW CAN GOD (YEHOVAH) BE A “GOD OF GODS” IF THERE REALLY ARE NO OTHER “GODS”??!! Its like claiming to be a “father” of many children without really having any children; Or a Director of a company which does not have any employees…!! God is not that cheap that He has to claim false titles for Himself. SO WHO ARE THESE “ELOHIYM” (GODS) WHOSE “EL” (GOD) IS “YEHOVAH” (ETERNAL ONE)? (I am writing about this in another write up, but for now read: “Deciphering G-O-D”, below).

Secondly, as you would have noted in my translation above, GEN 1:1 DOES NOT TALK ABOUT ANY CREATION ACTIVITY!!! It only talks about a selection process. Gods selected their lands! In this light, the Hindu belief that different planets are ruled by different gods does not seem farfetched. (Now, only if you keep reading you will understand it fully)!

Let me repeat:

Gen 1:1-The gods first chose their heavenly places and their nations.

2 -The land existed as desolate, devoid and dark for a long time because of a catastrophe. And the spirit gods shook over its face their semen.

(Oh, I know…! Just go to the lexicons and search out these words for yourselves. No spoon-feeding). Just as there are similarities between the Sanskrit and Hebrew languages, there are a lot of similarities between Jewish religious thoughts and Hinduism (things even Jewish teachers are not fully aware of!). According to some Hindu teachings, living beings were created when gods shook their semen onto the earth. The Hebrew word “mayim” used there for “water”, though commonly used to refer to drinking water, by euphemism can also mean – urine, semen: –  + piss, wasting.

Since there is no reason to conclude that Gen 1 mentions about the first creation of the earth we now live in, we can safely conclude that gods (elohyim), after first choosing their spaces, started their creation process in the places they selected for themselves. That way it is not hard to understand why intellectuals belonging to Hinduism can believe that Parashuram created Kerala by throwing his spade (Now, only if you keep reading you will understand it fully)!

3– And gods commanded light to come forth and light came forth.

This does not refer to any universal light, but is very clearly the light that came out of the darkness that covered the “land” (solar system?) at that time.

4 – The gods, they perceived that the light was truly precious: and so gods made a separation between the light and the darkness.

5 – The gods pronounced light as life and darkness as a misfortune. Came dusk and came dawn – the first time.

Please note: the Hebrew word “Yom”, translated as “day”, is mentioned only now (in vr 5), not before! In Hebrew, vr 5 ends as: hayah ereb hayah boqer yom echad. Since “Yom” also means a “process of time” or a period, the verse can be translated as: came dusk came dawn time first! The NIV is more accurate with its translation:“And there was evening, and there was morning–the first day”. Unlike the KJV, which translates it as:  “And the evening and the morning were the first day”. The use of “were” is not there in the Hebrew text and is used there by KJV to give it a different meaning.

We should also note here that the words “ereb” and “boqer” specifically means “dusk” and “dawn” and not “day” and “night”. The verse below makes it clear: Gen 8:22 – While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day (yôm) and night (layil  lêyl) shall not cease. So KJV has got its basics wrong here. I always used to wonder why “dusk” is mentioned as the start of a day in Genesis and not the “dawn”… now I know – its all just a big misinterpretation based on how Yom is translated!

In vr 5 the “dusk” follows the emergence of light and its separation from darkness, and then “dawn” follows dusk, after which a new time or day is born, in which a new work is done! In other words, AFTER an act of creation, there was dusk which was followed by dawn and then a new day and a new creation!!! So that gives us the freedom to conclude that the day starts at dawn, when the first rays of sun starts driving the night away – and that makes more sense! NOW, THE JEWS WILL BE SHATTERED TO KNOW THAT THE PHRASE USED THERE DOES NOT IN ANY WAY REFER TO THE START OF A NEW DAY AT DUSK!! The Jews and the Muslims count the start of the day at dusk, and Christians, most absurdly, count it from the middle of the night. But, interestingly, Hinduism counts the start of a day from the dawn!

From vr 1-4, we see the gods choosing their own spaces and then creating the light before starting off with their creational activities. From the way vr 5 ends (and with a good mix of some common sense) we can understand that THE FIRST DAY COMES ONLY AFTER THE CREATION OF THE LIGHT, BECAUSE HOW CAN THERE BE A “DAY” WITHOUT “LIGHT”?! Hence, the first day starts only in vr 5, AFTER the creation of light!

THIS CALLS FOR A RE-ARRANGEMENT OF THE CREATION TIMETABLE (!!!!):

– 1st Day (vr 5) – making of the firmament (vrs 6-8).

– 2nd Day (vr 8) – dry land and plants (vrs 9-12).

– 3rd Day (vr 13) – great and small lights in heaven for signs and seasons (vrs 14-18).

– 4th Day (vr 19) – fish and fowl emerge from water (vrs 20-22)*. Very Scientific!

– 5th Day (vr 23) – cattle and creatures emerge from the earth (24,25). Hinduism-like.

– 6th Day (vr  ?) – man was designed (vrs 26-30).

– 7th Day (vr  ?) – The day each creation was designated its role.

*This is how vrs 20-23 should have been translated: The gods commanded: let the waters bring out moving creatures that has life. And the waters brought forth fish and fowl in abundance. Those who know science would know how much more likelier it is for this to have happened this way than any other!

Except for after the creation of the firmament on the first day and the creation of ‘man’ on the 6th day (the first and the last creations mentioned in Ge 1), the word “good” is used to describe every creation. And each time, after the mention of “good”, we see the start of a new day and a new creation. Hence, it is surprising, that inspite of the use of the word “good” after the creation of cattle and creatures on the 5th day (vr 25), there is no mention of the start of another new day!

Gen 1:31 ends by saying: came dusk came dawn sixth day. Yet, we see Gen 2:2 starting with the mention of the activities of the 7th day. AND, UNLESS WE ACCEPT THAT THE FIRST “DAY” COULD EXIST EVEN BEFORE THE CREATION OF “LIGHT”, WE CANNOT FALL BACK TO THE OLD CREATION ORDER BASED ON WHICH WE ASSUME THAT GEN 1:31 TALKS ABOUT THE END OF 6TH DAY.

The solution: had the “hayah ereb hayah boqer” of vr 31 been mentioned at the end of vr 25 (keeping up with the order till then), and the one in vr 31 ended with “hayah ereb hayah boqer – yom shebiyiy (day seven)”, then the whole ‘schedule’ would have fallen right in place – with a lot more sense! Unless someone insists that God physically held the hands of every manuscript copiers and controlled their every thought while they were on it, I am willing to give some leeway for human error – deliberate or otherwise – to have crept in right from the first copy-writing to the final translation! As long as it is not a case of direct divine dictation at every stage – original writing, copy writing, and translation, there is bound to be mistakes. Haven’t you played “Chinese Whisper”?!

26 – And gods said, let us make a ruddy image that resembles us, to rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, beasts of the whole earth and every reptile that moves on the earth.

Reference        Word used     Heb               Mean                                                                                – Gen 1:26      – “man”          – adam          – ruddy.

– Lam 4:7        – “ruddy”       – adam          – reddish.

– Songs 5:10   – “ruddy”       – adom           – rosy.

– 1Sam 17:42  – “ruddy”      – admoniy     – reddish.

WE HAVE TO NOTE A VERY IMPORTANT POINT HERE: IT IS NOT CLAIMED ANYWHERE IN THE CREATION STORY OF GEN 1 THAT THE CREATION OF “MAN” MENTIONED IN VR 26 IS THE FIRST EVER CREATION OF A MAN – OR THE LAST!!

27 – So gods designed a ruddy image in their resemblance. The image gods designed in their resemblance, were divided into male and female selves.

According to some ancient beliefs, gods consist of both the sexes. Those who know biology knows that it is possible for both the sexes to be present in one body. Hence a person who is a bisexual is considered to have a god-like, dual spirited soul (not necessarily “body”). Here we see that when gods created human beings, they separated the sexes and gave them a different body.

28 – And gods blessed the images and said: O gods! Take up authority on thyself and completely subdue the nations. Rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air and every living being that moves on the earth.

The ruddy beings were given ‘complete’ authority to rule over “the nations” and “every living being that moves”, which would include the non-ruddy human beings – the black race (who probably survived the previous “catastrophe”, after which this new creation process started).  No wonder excavations keep throwing up human bones that are ages old! And life in Africa is said to have been the oldest!  This explains Cain’s fear of being attacked and the special protection he got from God!  It also explains what Cain meant when he said to Yehovah that he will be hidden from His face.

This also explains why Yehovah was upset with the SONS of gods (Elohyim) mingling with the daughters of ‘men’ (Adam, whom He created). The “Sons of God” in Gen 6 and Job 1 are literally sons of gods – the human representation of Elohiym – the ruddy beings. Compare with Job 38:7. According to Gen 6:4, giants were already there and children born to sons of gods and daughters of men were also mighty men from eternity past (or, from the previous life)…!!

Gen 2:-

1– Thus the heaven and the earth were completed with all its people.

2 – And the seventh day the gods finished deputing all that they had made.

3 – And gods congratulated each other on the seventh day and dedicated it for celebration because of all the work they had planned and executed.

Here we see that the gods are done with their creations and they celebrate their achievement by giving themselves a “weekly off” and a ‘party’!

The 2nd Creation Story!

Ge 2:4 – This is the detail of the heavens and the earth as they were created when Yehovah Elohim created them.

This verse draws a line between the creation acts of the gods (Elohim) in Gen 1 and that of Yehovah God. It doesn’t mean that what the gods created was destroyed by Yehovah.  The gods created the ‘ruddy’ men – the whites, but Yehovah moulded man from the clay of the ground – the brownish men. Compare it with Gen 6:6,7- Yehovah repented that He made men on the earth and He (Yehovah) vowed to destroy the men He had made (vr7) – not the whole world!

FROM GEN 2:4, YEHOVAH ELOHIYM COMES INTO THE PICTURE AND A DIFFERENT CREATION STORY BEGINS. Here is the table of comparison of both the creations:

Genesis 1                                                                               Genesis 2 (vr4 on)

1) Creation by Elohyim                                                    – Creation by Yehovah Elohyim

2) Elohyim designed male and female images           – Yehovah moulded a male out of the ground

3) Human images designed after the creation            – Man moulded before the creation of plants (vr5)*                                                                          of plants

4) Animals created before man                                      -Animals created out of the ground after the creation of man.

5) Elohyim designed men in their likeness                 -Yehovah moulds man out of the   they were living beings (Ge 1:27)                                   ground and gives him life by                                                                                                                breathing into him (Ge 2:7).

*In Ge 2:5, we see an empty, dry earth – with no rain and no man to work on it – when Yehovah created Adam! (– There came up fog over the earth and moistened the whole soil). But in Ge 1, we see an earth already teeming with life when Elohyim made their images!

Deciphering G-O-D

Verses where different names of “GOD” first appear:

Ge 1:1 – In the beginning Elohim created; 26 – Then Elohim said, “Let us make man…”

Ge 2:4 – When the Yehovah Elohim made the earth and the heavens

Ge 12:1 – The Lord Yehovah had said to Abram

Ge 15:1 – After this the word of Yehovah came to Abram in a vision….

Vr 2 – But Abram said, Adonay Yehovih

Vr 7 – He also said to him, I am the Yehovah who brought you out of Ur

Ge 17:1 – When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, I am EL Shaddai

Almost none of the major world religions have given a first name for the Only Almighty God. “Om” in Hinduism just means “an all-encompassing one” who is both the creator and the destroyer. The word “Shaddai” in Hebrew also means “the nurturer and the destroyer”. Even the name “Yehovah”, is not a Noun! It is an amalgamation of the first letters of a sentence (read more below).

Many world religions have this concept of gods having appeared in different forms (avatars), but none of these gods are considered THE ultimate, all-powerful God. But many times such avatars are referred to as God almighty more because of whom they represent.

In that sense, the saying that God is one and everyone calls on Him with different names, makes some sense. Because everyone who believes in a God believes that there is ONE Almighty God who is above all other gods (including Hindus who worship the ONE Almighty God through His different avatars! Thus, Hinduism is NOT a polytheist religion!!!).

IF WE BELIEVE THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE ALMIGHTY GOD THEN HOW CAN WE BE WORRIED ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE BELIEVING IN ANOTHER ALMIGHTY GOD?! AND IF THAT OTHER PERSON ALSO BELIEVES THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE ALMIGHTY GOD THEN HOW CAN BOTH BE TALKING ABOUT DIFFERENT GODS??!!

EL of EL-ohim

We have to keep in mind that EL (God) is a title and Shaddai (Almighty) is the adjective given to the title – THEY ARE NOT NAMES! Likewise, YHWH (Yehovah), though used commonly as a noun (introduced so by Moses) is in reality, a Tetragrammaton.  As I had revealed in one of my previous write-ups, “I am that I am” (of Ex 3:14) is NOT revealed there as God’s name! God was revealing His state of being. As a verb it means “to be” or “to exist”, and so the sentence can mean “I am my own cause” or “I self-exist”. Thus the word YHWH actually means “the eternally self-existent One”. So, we have an Almighty (Shaddai) God (EL), who is Eternally Existent (YHWH – YeHoVaH ).

Then there is Elohim (gods).EL means God and EL-ohim means gods. So there’s no way both EL and Elohim means the same – one is singular and the other plural. EL cannot be Elohim also because Yehovah is said to be the EL (God) of Elohim (gods): Jos 22:22 – אלאלהיםיהוה – Yehovah, EL of Elohim (Self-existent, God of gods). As I said, just like how I cannot claim to be a king of a kingdom without having a kingdom in the first place, God cannot claim to be the God of gods if there are no gods, in the first place. So, who does this Elohim (gods) refer to?

Wicked EL-ohim

Let me introduce to you the bad ones first. There are naughty, disobedient, and even wicked gods (Elohim). Righteous men who lead an exemplary life are elevated to be righteous or holy Elohim. As inheritors of god-like image, they are given the responsibility to spread godly knowledge to likely candidates (like with Enoch). Similarly, wicked men through their wicked influences are elevated to being revered as gods by men. And they go about causing trouble in God’s creations, leading them to rebellion and destruction. The first of whom is said to be Nimrod – grandson of Noah.

Deu 32:17 – They sacrificed unto devils, not to God (Eloha); to gods (Elohim) whom they knew not, to new gods (Elohim) that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

God here is talking about evil men (devils) who are elevated to be wicked Elohim, and are worshipped by men. The later part of the verse also means that the patriarchs of Israel feared other Elohim…!! Now, eat that! (The verses below will help you in digesting it…!!!):

EL-ohim of Fathers

Ge 5:24 – Enoch moved along with gods (Elohim) – and he was unsearchable because Elohyim took (lâqach) him away. Enoch had a constant relation with gods and he got his wisdom from them. He was so liked by Elohyim that they carried him away without letting him pass through the process of physical death. For us, lesser mortals, we too can hope for a carrying away – after death, as sons of Korah wrote: Psa 49:15 – But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive (lâqach) me.

I believe that Enoch was elevated to being an Elohim. So can human beings become gods? Psa 82:6– I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. 7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes. Also Isa 41:23…!!!

You will also be pleased to know this: Gen 32:28 – And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God (Elohim) and with men, and hast prevailed. 30 – And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God (Elohim) face to face, and my life is preserved. Here, Jacob is not fighting with the Almighty Yehovah but with an Elohyim! But, if you insist that Elohyim by its plurality refers to the Triune God and that Jacob was not fighting any ‘god’, then it should mean that Jacob was fighting God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, all at the same time and all three together could not defeat a cowardly, hairless man, inspite of fighting with him the whole night!!!!! (You wont get me to believe that nonsense. I can assure you that!!).

Why They Reject the NT and Its Messiah

Why They Reject the NT and Its Messiah

– Abraham Jos –

Few months back, just when I thought that I had gathered the answers for almost all my queries, there came a couple of “Brethren” friends who set my ‘tail’ on fire (they don’t know about the effect as it was part of a casual conversation)! One asked me if I thought that Mary’s ovum was used for Jesus the embryo…! The other “Brethren” asked me how the ‘virginity’ of Mary could ever be a sign to anyone on earth…?! This jolted me out of my sense of contentment and pushed me into another ‘search and rescue mission’ and I ended up personally interacting with five (un-‘christened’) Jewish Rabbis! The outcome was so profound that it changed my total outlook.

What we (Protestants) think that they (Jews) think is not exactly what they think (and vice versa in some cases). We think that they consider Jesus only as a prophet and not as a Messiah. Most of them do not consider Jesus at all. Some say that maybe there was someone by that name who, like many other rebel leaders, tried to upstage the Romans and was killed. We say, silly Jews, they are missing out on God’s eternal salvation by rejecting Jesus the Messiah. But they say, silly you, since man is not born in sin, we don’t need a Saviour..!! The Jews don’t believe that man is born in sin, but that he chooses to sin by his own free will and that forgiveness from sin can still be attained in the Old ‘Testamental’ way so they don’t need a ‘New’ Testamental saviour to die for them. The whole concept that when Adam sinned, his sinless, immortal constitution changed into a sinful, mortal one plunging the whole human race into sin, is just an assumption. Why so? Because there is no record of such a change in Genesis. We just read it INTO the passage. Infact, if we read Ge 3 carefully we can see that nothing had changed in them after the sin because they stopped living for ever only because God sent them away from the tree of life!! And why exactly did God have to send them away from the tree of life? Because God knew that since nothing had changed they could continue living for ever if they had access to the tree of life – just like before they sinned!

One of the proofs of “birth sin” that is often mentioned  is how the kids lie and steal right from their early childhood days. People ask, who taught that kid to lie at that age? But my question is, who taught that kid to feel guilty at that age? If they were born in sin they shouldn’t be feeling guilty about it!! Since the feeling of guilt is a result of the sense of righteousness within, the way kids try and hide their wrongs reveals to us that that sense of righteousness is implanted in them!! If the human race had by default become sinful because of Adam’s sin, and they were all born as sinners thereafter, then wasn’t God over-reacting in Ge 6:5,6? If sinners weren’t sinful, what else was God expecting them to be??! If we insist that Adam and Eve became sinners and lost God’s glory because of the sin they committed, then we have a very serious problem in our hands. In Ge 3:22 while referring to Adam’s state after his sin we see God saying “Behold, the man is become AS ONE OF US”…! O, God! Ho, ho, ho, ho!! Did you hear what God said? Because of his sin Adam became more like God (“is become as one”) than what he was while he was sinless..!!!! Can someone give me a bottle of logic please…? I’m thirsty! I don’t think Elohyim had any idea about Adam’s “sinful nature” when he made that statement! But I won’t criticise Him squarely for that. Poor guy, He didn’t have any Bible Colleges to go to, did He?

So, what about the fellowship with God that we say was broken after sin? Interestingly, while there is no record of any details of God fellowshipping with them before the sin, we can see God very personally fellowshipping with them after the sin! He comes searching for them (like as before), has conversation with them, He makes designer leather jackets for them, etc.! He is later seen chatting up with the murderer Cain and even puts a divine security seal on him threatening to punish anyone who would dare harm him..!! Hence, the opposite is true concerning the effect of sin on God’ s fellowship with man. He continues to keep in cordial touch with Adam, Cain and others after sin!

In the Messianic verses of the OT God talks about raising his anointed servant in the last days (the “last days” – yom – common sense suggests, could definitely not have been 2000yrs ago! It’s yet to come). Who, when he appears, will uphold the Law of God and help the children of Israel in their complete restoration and eternal sanctification (IN ONE COMING) – something which the Christians have failed to see happen with Jesus. But on the other hand, God also says that this anointed one will bring God-fearing, Law-abiding Gentiles unto himself and gather them into his ever-lasting home – something that the Jews have difficulty accepting. While, on the one hand, the Jews are entrapped by their over-whelming focus on traditions and a misplaced fear of God that has resulted in a lack of proper Godly insight (not knowledge) of the Scriptures. On the other, the Christians are caged-in by the Hellenised version of the Scripture and their blind surrender to the “New” Pauline teachings!

Many NT teachers know that they are precariously perched atop a swaying tree but they just can’t cut the branch on which they are holding on to (can they?!). No wonder they have to resort to embarrassing logics to defend their position (that includes even the best of apologetic teachers in Christendom)! With a desire to end this embarrassment, I venture to chop out some rotten roots of Christianity that are feeding on misconceptions and misinterpretations. Inspite of the threat of further isolation that hangs over me, I hereby proceed, deriving strength from the fact that God is equally upset with the high-jacking of His perpetual precepts and the appalling apologetics that try and justify the same!

The Axe is Fallen on Christian Roots:

1) Lord’s Day SundayJesus Rose-Again Day

The NT does not mention anywhere that Sunday is the Lord’s Day. Writer John of the book of Revelation mentions Lord’s Day, without specifying it as a Sunday (or even a Saturday). But using the laws of Protestant interpretation, since Sunday is not mentioned as the Lord’s Day anywhere else in the Bible, then this should by default be referring to the Sabbath because in the NT the Lord Jesus says that he is the “Lord of the Sabbath” – which would thus qualify the seventh day to be the Lord’s Day. Infact, it seems that the Greek phrase used there refers to the great “Day of the LORD,” – the “Yom Adonai” – which is a future event. So what is the big deal, you ask? The big deal is that, if it cannot be established that the term “Lord’s Day” used by John in Revelation is a Sunday, then that leaves the Sunday Believers with ABSOLUTELY NO verse in the entire Bible to support such an important basis of their faith – the Sunday worship!! (Acts 20 is being dealt below).

It is said that Sunday came to be considered as the Lord’s Day because Jesus rose again on it. But who asked whom to consider it so? The Bible does not record the disciples arriving at such conclusions. So form where did the concept creep in? (Acts 20 is being dealt below). What if I were to say that we should consider Friday as the Lord’s Day because it was on that day that the Lord gave himself up for the mankind…? Who would be competent to decide which one to follow??

The really shattering part here is that the gospels does not say anywhere that Jesus rose up on a Sunday morning..!! (Yes, you should verify it yourselves). Oh yes, I have read the part where Mary went early in the morning on the First Day of the Week (FDoW) to the tomb and found it empty. If you pay attention, you would realise to your utter amazement that the verse does not say that Jesus rose again on that day. It only says that he was not there when Mary reached there early Sunday morning. “What’s the big deal?” you ask. The big deal is that, based on that verse you can ONLY ASSUME (not claim) that Jesus rose again on a Sunday…!!!! What about Jesus’ claim that he will rise again after three days? Wont it be then on Sunday…?? I have dealt with it in another of my write ups… (Its like how you try and evade one pothole only to bump into a bigger one)!! So, “Lord’s Day – Sunday – Jesus rose-again day” is just an assumption, at best…!!

Have you ever wondered how dumb the disciples had to be to not understand that Jesus would die only to rise up again after three days?! He warned them many times, very specifically that he would die but rise again the third day. If I were to tell my kids the same things (inspite of the fact that I have not done any miracles before; or that they are too young to grasp the meaning), they would anxiously await the third day. How come NO ONE, including the guards and the disciples, saw the actual resurrection – which according to the NT teachers is the main teaching on which the NT church stands??! According to the OT law: Deut 19:15 – “at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be establishment”. Poor God! Now how can he criticise the Jews for not believing in the resurrection story – there were no witnesses of the incident??!!

2) The Breaking of Bread Ritual

It is said that the NT ritual of Breaking Bread as ordained by Jesus was first observed daily by his apostles and then due to practical constraints shifted to only once a week. Acts 20 is said to be the passage which proves that the early church kept the ritual weekly on Sundays. But let me ask you something: Since Sunday was not a weekly holiday those days (it was a normal working day all over the world), what practical reasons would have made them to choose that day over the rest of the working days??!!! (Now, don’t go back to the “Lord’s Day” point again, please)! If you have noticed, Jesus did not (ritually) Break Bread with his disciples the first Sunday after resurrection!

So what about the term Breaking of Bread (BoB) mentioned in Acts 20…? Again, it’s a misinterpretation. Because the term BoB is just a term used to refer to eating food, according to both the Scriptural and cultural context – NOTHING ELSE. Scriptural Context: in Luke 24:35, when the disciples of Emmaus tell the other disciples “how (Jesus) was known of them in breaking of bread”, they were referring to the dinner Jesus had with them before he disappeared. (More examples of such non-ritual “breaking bread”: Mat 14:19 / Mat 15:36 / Luke 24:30 / Acts 27:35).  So (once again, based on the laws of Protestant interpretations), unless otherwise specified, the term BoB should only mean having food. Even according to the Cultural Context, all through the ages, the Middle Eastern people have their meals by literally breaking their bread. So world over, the term Breaking Bread is used commonly to refer to having a meal. The 30th March 2012 edition of the Bangalore Times paper carries a front page write up about Indian actress Vidya Balan. It says: “Vidya isn’t breaking bread with the big daddies (top film-makers), post work”. I hope you did not for a moment think that Vidya Balan and the other film-makers are actually NT believers..!!

3) God-inspired Holy Bible

The word “inspire” basically means, to encourage. So it should just mean that God encouraged the writers to write what he wanted them to. That would then mean that the writers could use their own words. This would eventually mean that every word of the original was not from God. Then there is a problem. They say that every word of the original text was from God….! When a class teacher dictates notes to her students, every word would be hers and every note will look identical. The individuality, outlook or other differences of the students won’t be seen in their notes (except for the handwriting, that is). But, when the class teacher inspires her students to write, say a poem or a short story, inspite of the topic given being the same, every note will be different . So, when you say “God-inspired”, you are actually wanting to mean “God-dictated”. In that case, how can anyone explain the numerous NT misquotes from the OT, which is ascribed to the writer’s desire to pacify certain section of its readers? Why is it claimed that Matthew and Luke probably borrowed from Mark when the HS (who is the same as God the Father, but different) was standing by to help dictate every word..??

Just an example: From the four gospel writers, three quotes Jesus as saying that Peter would deny him thrice BEFORE the cock crows. But Mark specifically mentions “before the cock CROW TWICE”. With the HS dictating, it should either be BEFORE the cock crows or AFTER the cock crows. It just CAN’T be both! When such discrepancies are brought to the notice of the ‘apologetic’ teachers, you are given the example of how four journalists reporting the same incident may have slight differences in their reports. That is quite understandable because as human beings four journalists may see things in four different ways and because of their human limitations may get certain statistics and facts differently. But we are talking here about four writers (from which two have actually witnessed that incident) being dictated every word by the same all-knowing God the Spirit…!!!! How can they manage to see things differently (remember the class teacher’s example given above)…….??!! I have a better explanation for all this, I feel that when God fore-saw the four gospels written identically, he would have gotten really bored and so he told the HS to allow some interesting variations to creep in… just to keep us excited!! The four gospel writers are quoting, un-quoting the words of Jesus with the dictation of the Holy Spirit and yet manages to have two different quotes altogether..!! What a cock-n-bull story!!!

Infact, Luke 1:1-3, shatters the Holy Spirit dictationship myth..! In vr 1 he claims that many have written the gospel. Please note that he does not discredit them. Infact, he goes on to add that what the “many” had written were “most surely believed” by the apostles (read the verse carefully). In vr 2 he says that the “eyewitnesses”, who also ministered the word, passed on these “many” writings. In vr 3, he says he was also encouraged to write, “in order”, “all things” that he had “perfectly understood” “from the very beginning” …!!!!! I get a feeling that when Luke started writing, the Holy Spirit would have gone on vacation. Seriously! He had already worked with “many” people to write the gospel and here is a gentile who was not an eyewitness nor a disciple of one, venturing to write the same story all over again…!! “Give me a break”, the HS would have said!!!  Luke here is destroying the all-Scripture-God-inspired myth, when he says that he is venturing to write a) what he has heard from the eyewitnesses, b) read from their accounts, and c) which he has set in order according to his “perfect” understanding (leaving no room for any outside help)!!!! I am really ashamed at the stupid defences that people like Josh McDowell, Ravi Zac, etc., bring out in support of such discrepancies! No wonder why learned men seldom accept the gospel that is preached..!!! It sounds so childishly silly.

Neither God in the OT nor Jesus in the NT mentions about any additions to the Scriptures. When you read the Bible you can see that the NT writers wrote the gospels and the letters to individuals or specific groups for their consumption and it was read by those who received them – as normal letters were read.  The only claim of the NT as ‘scripture’ comes from within itself – 2Pe 3:16. Which, if carefully studied, contradicts 2Ti 3:16! Paul talks about “All” Scripture that is already given (at the time of his writing), which is good enough to make the man of God perfect (and you don’t need to add to perfectness, do you?!). What “holy Scriptures” do you think he is referring to in vr 15 that Timothy’s mother and grandmother taught him (2Ti 1:5) as a child? The proof of credibility of the NT should come not from within itself, but from what was already there. Otherwise it would mean that if someone were to write a book and claim in it that it was a part of the scripture and add it to the rest of the Bible, we then have no option but to just accept it!

The Jews never claim inerrancy of the written word (even of the Torah) and so they do not have a problem accepting that there are post-Moses additions to it. We think that our OT of the Bible and the Jewish Scriptures are the same. The fact is that the books are the same but there are differences in the usages and crucial words. A Jewish Rabbi tells me that the KJV OT is the closest translation to the Jewish Bible, but even that is influenced heavily by a Christianised Messianic outlook.

What has the NT done?

1) It contradicts God’s words: When God says in the OT “there is NO ONE else”, Jesus says in the NT “believe ALSO in me”.

2) It glorifies what God abhors: God says in the OT that human sacrifice is an abomination to him, but the NT not only glorifies it but holds God responsible for the most popular one in human history!

3) It belittles what God esteems: When God himself is proud of the Law He gave to Israel to keep them perpetually and counts them to be a privileged group for having it, the NT counts it a curse.

4) It is confuses the wit out: There are 100s of denominational splits based on the interpretations of the NT doctrines. Most of the differences are still unsolved. There are hardly any based on the OT.

5) It leads to a guilt-ridden life: It claims that man is born in sin and is prone to sin all his present life. It says that apart from the free gift of forgiveness, man on his own is incapable to please God. While, the God of OT expects man to please Him with their good intent and deed!

4) The Great I AM

One of the many proofs of Jesus’ divinity is his use of God’s name “I am”… (another stupid logic that I felt so bad about, even as a youngster)!!! Jesus once said “before Abraham was, I am”. “I” is ego and “am” is aimi which means I exist or I have been. Jesus was trying to tell his listeners that he started existing before Abraham. He could have said “before Abraham was, I was”, but that would mean that he is no more now. So to convey that he was there before Abraham was and he still is, Jesus was only using the best available grammar. Even otherwise, Jesus only used 1/3rd of the name of God. He just used “I am” from “I am that I am”. With that logic, Paul should be more of God than Jesus because in 1Cor 15:10, he says: “I am what I am”… Here he uses the complete phrase; only one alphabet is different; and the meaning is almost the same!!! Step aside Jesus, Paul is a bigger God than you!!

What makes it more stupefying is the fact that the place where God is said to be revealing his name to Moses is grossly misunderstood. If you read carefully you will be zapped. Moses asks God what he should say when he goes to the Israelites and tells them that the “The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you” and they ask him “what is his name?” God replies to Moses saying “I am that I am” – hayah asher hayah – which means, I exist because I exist. In other words “go tell them that I am the self-existent one. I don’t need a name”…! Just a small example: say I had many children and they were all playing outside except one who was at home and as the sun was setting I tell the one at home to go tell his brothers that daddy is calling. If he was to ask me “Daddy, what if they ask me what your name is?” and I with a smile on my face tell him “just tell, daddy told”, would that mean my name is “Mr Just Tell Daddy Told”???!!! How much brains do you need to immediately say “no”?!

So, did God not reveal His name to Moses? If you read further (Ex 3:15), you can see God saying “Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you THIS is my name for ever”. “This”, not “that”! This, what I said just now is my name. That, what I said then, is what I am. Moses, please don’t get confused….!!! Imagine, if someone were stop me on the road and ask me “what is your name?” and I, not able to hear properly, ask back “What did you ask?” And if that person were to say: “Oh! Glad to meet you Mr What-did-you-ask!”, how ridiculous would that be? Imagine further, if the same person were to ask the same question to my son and he not able to hear properly ask back “what?” and the man exclaims: “Oh! So you and your father are one!”, how extremely ridiculous would that be, too, right? “I AM” is not a part of God’s name… I AM sorry! Really, I AM!!

5) Yehovah and His God-heads

It is very interesting to note that OT nowhere talks about any God-heads but the one Yahweh God. It does not talk about a God-Son or a God-Spirit who are different in everything and yet one in everyway. According to the NT, Psalm 110 is a prophecy about Jesus. If you read the background you can understand that it was infact a Psalm written by David for the coronation ceremony of his son Solomon as the king and was used for similar ceremonies thereafter. In vr 1 David says: “The Lord (Yehovah – self existent) says to my lord (adon – ruler, owner)”. The word adon is the same used by Sarah to address Abraham in Ge 18:12. Where does the second person in Trinity (who is the same as the first person in the Trinity but different), fit in here?

If you say that David is referring to the second person in Trinity with the second “Lord” (adon), as his Lord, then the question that begs to be asked is was the first “Lord” (Yehovah) not David’s Lord? If both Yehovah and adon were the same then how come one is David’s Lord and the other is not? And if both the Lords were David’s Lords, because they both were one, then why does David only call one of them his “Lord”? Did he not understand Trinity? (Probably not, because it was not taught in his times)!! The basic problem with all major Christian teachings is the inability of Bible-teaching westerners to properly understand and thus interpret eastern cultures and lifestyles on which the Bible is based. They could not fathom that a king can be called “god”, or a master, “father”.

Let me draw your attention to a seemingly unharmful but very dynamic verse: Isa 44:6Thus saith the LORD (yehôvâh), the King of Israel, and his Redeemer the LORD of hosts: I am the first, and I am the last, and beside* Me there is no God (‘ĕlôhı̂ym). *(a part of; from or out of, among, because of, by reason of, through, with). Here we see yehôvâh categorically claiming that there is no ‘ĕlôhı̂ym (the part of Trinity where Jesus was supposed to fit in) before Him, after Him, because of Him, by the reason of Him, through Him or WITH HIM..!! As if He foresaw the “begotten son” claims that were to come!

A Question that begs to be Asked :-

Heb 12:2Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Being seated at the right hand is a symbolic place of highest honour given by a greater authority. So when the Bible says that Christ was seated at the right hand of God then won’t it put a glorified Christ below in the hierarchy with God as he is seated at God’s right hand? What really needs to be asked is “where is the Holy Spirit seated?” Don’t tell me that he is seated on the left hand of God, because if being seated on the right hand is the highest honour one can give to another then being seated on the left hand would be a lesser honour. Thus the HS should be considered lower than Jesus in hierarchy..!! But why this disparity in equality??!!

6) Sinless – Lion of Judah – Born of a Virgin

The “virgin birth” is supposed to be one of the greatest prophetic fulfilments of Jesus the Messiah. It was meant to be a sign to mankind. But…, apart from the fact that the verse taken from Isaiah, to claim the virgin birth prophecy, is a shining example of ridiculous misinterpretations, how could Mary’s virginity during her delivery ever be a sign to any other human being on earth?! Even her mother would have doubted her chastity, once she became pregnant..!! What a nonsense sign that turned out to be – a sign that no one could see!! A sign that backfired so badly that Mary was considered adulterous and Jesus – a bastard!! I guess it would have been wiser on God’s part to have let Jesus be born through Zacharias and Elizabeth (who were also righteous and blameless before Him), and let John be born through Mary….! Or, did Gabriel get it botched up?!

So, was Jesus born sinless because a man’s sperm was not used? (If Mary was righteous enough to bear a sinless child, and her cousin Elizabeth and her husband Zacharias be righteous and blameless enough to be considered so by God, what then was the need for crucifixion, in the first place?)!! But, if Mary’s ovum was used by the Holy Spirit to form Jesus the embryo and if this embryo-Jesus did ‘feed’ on his mother Mary through the umbilical cord, if he did suck from Mary’s breasts as a new-born baby and if any part of Mary’s DNA was passed onto this baby Jesus… then how could he be sinless? Otherwise, Mary, her parents and her whole lineage should have been born sinless…! If we consider that Mary’s ovum was not used but she only carried God’s embryo in her womb and that the child was not connected to Mary in anyway and did not even suck her breasts, then how can he ever be David’s son without any human connection to David??

Did you know that according to the Jewish custom, a child inherits a tribe only through his father? By being born to a Jewish mother one only becomes a Jew, but he belongs to a tribe only through his father!! So, if Jesus had to be from the tribe of Judah, he had to have a biological father from that tribe. (Legal fatherhood is only for human ‘consumption’). Which means, if a Jewish woman, say from the tribe of Levi, gives birth out of wedlock to a child whose father is from the tribe of Benjamin, but is legally adopted by her husband who is from the tribe of Judah, the child will be considered by others as part of the tribe of Judah, but only as long as his biological father is not known (spl during those days when ‘actuality’ superseded ‘legality’). But as far as God is concerned, since he knows from the beginning who his biological father is, the child will not be considered by Him as from the tribe of Judah…!! So Mary’s tribal root is not enough to connect Jesus to the tribe of Judah.

God very specifically claims in the OT that a descendent from the line of David will sit on the throne of David to rule the world…!!! Ps 2:12 – “Kiss the Son”. The Hebrew word used here for “son” is bar which means “heir to the throne”. (In vr 7 the Lord tells David “You are my Son”. The word used there is bane which means son of a father). So the warning given in vr 10 to kings and rulers is to “serve the Lord with fear” and to kiss the heir to the throne of the king installed on Zion (vr 6). The chapter ends by saying that blessed are those who take refuge in this heir to the throne. When God says that the anointed one will be from the tribe of Judah, then he should be born of the sperm of a human male from that tribe. Otherwise, what God said would turn out to be meaningless. Since only biological sons are legal heirs to their father’s throne and since Jesus does not have a paternal biological descent from David (in anyway), we could conclude that he is NOT the future heir to David’s throne!!

So, is Jesus not the Messiah? The word mashı̂yach (Messiah) means – an anointed person or a consecrated person: like a king (I Sam 26:11) or a priest (Lev 4:3). God through his prophets, anointed kings, priests and others from time to time for certain tasks. Jesus cannot be an anointed one because, as God, he did not need to be “set apart” for any task! We should keep in mind that  “mashach” – the process of anointing – was introduced by God as a sign to reveal His approval to man (anointer, ‘anointee’ and witnesses)!! As we see in 1Sam 16:1, God had already chosen David to be the king, but anointing was done in the presence of his family (vr13). God considered it as a formal commissioning because He filled David with His Spirit from that day on. So God the Son being anointed to reign on David’s throne will be like the owner of a company writing an appointment letter for himself – with his seal and signature!!!

A classical representation of misinterpretations is the prophecy of Messiah in Gen 3:15 – “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel”. It is said that the woman’s seed mentioned here is in singular hence it refers to Jesus the Messiah. RUBBISH! The “seed” – zera – is always used in ‘singular’, ex: Ge 13:16. Well… (I have had lots of ‘fun’ asking this to others): IF GOD HERE IS REFERRING TO JESUS AS EVE’S SEED, THEN WHO IS THE SEED OF THE SERPENT THAT HE IS REFERRING TO? (If you are at home, please feel free to scratch your head)!! It is very clear from Ge 3: 14(thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go) that God was cursing a real snake that belonged to the animal kingdom. So, contextually, when God says “thy seed” to the snake, he should be referring to real (animal) snakes. If, for the sake of argument, we consider that God was referring to satan and Jesus, then the ‘prophecy’ was not fulfilled. Jesus underachieved it as he could not even scratch satan’s head, while satan exceeded his brief as he actually bruised Jesus from head to toe!!

Greco + Romo = Christo:

Isn’t it interesting that the Jews were greatly impacted by 150yrs of Greek occupation! Hellenistic Judaism is an offshoot of the Greek impact. The Jews were subject to various occupations and exiles (some lasting few centuries) but no exile has made such a great impact on them. The Hebrew Scripture was said to be translated into Greek to help the Jewish population that had forgotten their language. When you consider the fact that the Vedas did not have to be translated into English to help the Indians who had forgotten their mother tongue during their 400yrs of British occupation, you can understand that there is more to it “than meets the eye”! You can see that it was all a part of a ‘greater’ plan. Alexander the Great was convinced that the Greek culture was the one force that could unify the world (the motivation behind his unbelievable conquest spree). So he made sure that Greek language and philosophy were accepted by everyone – including the Jews. And if you ever thought that Greek influence died out a little after Alexander, then you are wrong, becauseit is very much alive and kicking!!!

If we look around we can see Christian countries aggressively imposing western philosophies on the world through democratic governance, modern education, religious teachings and (even) sporting activities. This led me to search forthe origin of this western philosophy. If we study about it we can understand that it is an off-shoot of Greek and Roman philosophies.Socrates, Plato and Aristotle – three great philosophers the world has ever known – were Greek. They are credited with having laid the foundations of Western philosophy and science!  According to GREEK PHILOSOPHY of the origin of universe, Chaos (a body that contains all elements of nature) produced Gaea (earth), which inturn produced Uranus (heaven) and later married each other. Through their union came Cronos (Saturn) who married his sister Rhea (?) and Zues was their child. Chaos in English means confusion or disorder (it has its origin from the Greek word khaos, which means void or nothingness). It’s no small surprise thus that Georges Lemaître, the man who proposed what is now known as “the Big Bang theory”, was a Roman Catholic priest and a professor of physics at the Catholic University of Louvain! He had his early education at a Jesuit secondary school and studied civil engineering at the Catholic University! Galileo Galilei – an Italian physicist, mathematician and astronomer; who is known as the father of modern astronomy and science and played a major role in the Scientific Revolution – was a Roman Catholic. Albert Einstein who came from a non-observant Jewish family attended a Catholic school!

FORMAL EDUCATION existed in ancient times in Greece, Rome, India and China. During the Middle Ages, the monasteries of the Catholic Churches in Europe were the centres of education and literacy. Prior to their formal establishment, many medieval universities were run for hundreds of years as Christian monastic schools (Scholae monasticae), in which monks taught classes; evidence of these dates back to the early 6th century. The current system of education, with its western style and content, was introduced and spread around by the British.

Though a wide range of SPORTING ACTIVITIES were already established in China, Egypt and Persia, even as early as 2000BC, it was the Greeks who organised and regulated it by creating the Olympic Games. The origin of these Olympics is shrouded in mystery and legend. One of the most popular myths identifies Heracles and his father Zeus as the progenitors of the Games.  The Olympics were of fundamental religious importance, featuring sporting events alongside ritual sacrifices. For the ancient Greeks, fire had divine connotations—it was thought to have been stolen from the gods by Prometheus. During the Olympic Games, which honoured Zeus, additional fires were lit at his temple and that of his wife, Hera. The modern Olympic flame is ignited at the site where the temple of Hera used to stand . Eleven women, representing the Vestal Virgins, perform a ceremony in which the torch is kindled by the light of the Sun, its rays concentrated by a parabolic mirror. The first Olympics was conducted in the honour of Zeus. Pelops, a divine hero and mythical king of Olympia is also honoured. Olympia, the site where the Olympic Games in classical times were held, dating back to 776 BC, is also a temple sanctuary of ancient Greece. Enclosed within the sacred enclosure are the Temple of Hera and Temple of Zeus, and the area of the altar, where sacrifices were made.

Believe it or not, even the concept of a DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE has its formal origins in Ancient Greece. The term Democracy first appeared in ancient Greek political and philosophical thought. The Greek city state of Athens, led by Cleisthenes, established what is generally held as the first democracy in 507 BCE. And who is pushing hard for this Greek-invented form of government? Christians! You can see the ‘connect’ now, don’t you?! If you think that this western philosophy is doing the world a world of good, then take a 2nd thought. Take a look at every country that is christian-dominated, western-educated and democratically governed – countries like UK, USA and Australia – and compare their prevalent moral and social values with that of the Muslim countries. Look at the cities of India that are influenced by the western philosophies and compare its values with that of villages and towns not influenced by them. (Please note that we have to measure the values on the basis of the scriptures given by God). This philosophy is made to turn man against God!

I am glad that God is initially sending His messiah to take control of the earth and to rule it! Because, if He were to come to this earth in a human form, He would immediately be arrested, tried and hanged by the International Court of Justice, for the atrocities He has committed against mankind in human right violations, war crimes and abuse of power!!!! Take a look at His record: He initiated brutal, inhuman capital punishment even for petty offences; he encouraged slavery; He tolerated polygamy; He ordered ethnic cleansing which resulted in the killing of thousands of innocent women and children; His commandments were pro-men and against equality of women (ex: test of virginity not for men); He propagated animal sacrifice and allowed the killing of millions of animals; He has threatened to kill everyone who does not follow his commands by some ‘weapons’ of mass destruction…!! In light of the modern, western philosophy that governs the world today, Jehovah God appears to be worse than Hitler, Saddam or even W Bush! God needs to be hanged – send Him down here, ye angels!!

When Rome took control of Greece they adopted their gods and gave them Latin names. They also created a few myths of their own including The Founding of Rome. In ROMAN RELIGION the worship of the Greek sun god Helios was converted into the cult of Sol Invictus (Invincible Sun). The worship of Sol as special protector of the emperors and of the empire remained the chief imperial religion until it was incorporated into Christianity. Some early Christian writers connected the sun to the birth of Jesus, which they believe was prophesied in Malachi 4:2 as the “Sun of Righteousness.” It is believed that the date of December 25th for Christmas was selected in order to correspond with the Roman festival of Dies Natalis Solis Invicti – the birthday of the unconquered sun. “O, how wonderfully acted Providence that on that day on which that Sun was born…Christ should be born”, wrote Saint Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage.

The fusion of Greek, Roman and Palestinian communities, under the secure Roman rule, formed the background for the new era of Christendom. The widespread adoption of Christianity helped in popularizing the Greek and Roman myths. From the early years of Renaissance, artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, portrayed the Pagan subjects of Greek mythology alongside more conventional Christian themes. Through the medium of Latin and the works of Ovid, Greek myth influenced medieval and Renaissance poets such as Petrarch, Boccaccio and Dante in Italy. The acceptance of Christianity enabled the Romans to take hold of the majority middle-class, thus enabling them to further their theme of universality (Catholicism).

(Pic 1): The Lament for Icarus by Herbert James Draper, 1898. Compare both the above pics: note the head fallen to the right, bent legs, cloth around the groin, hand of the woman beneath the upper torso, tending females, etc. Both are ‘fallen’ sons of gods – one is Greek and the other Roman!!

The link between modern Roman Catholicism and Greek beliefs is evident in a few symbols:

The symbol X with a P placed in its centre is derived from the first two Greek words for Christ (Christos), Chi – X and Rho – P. These are the letters that supposedly appeared to Emperor Constantine after which he made Christianity the official religion of Rome.

IXOYE is an abbreviation of the Greek words Iesous Christos Theou Uios Soter (Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Saviour). It’s pronounced as “ickthoos” and they are similar to the Greek word for “fish”, which went on to become a popular Christianity symbol, probably 2nd only to the cross.

Thus, the most famous Christian symbol – the Cross – has a Roman connect; while the second most famous Christian symbol – the Fish – has a Greek connect!! Interesting?!

It is disturbingly evident that Protestant Christianity, as an offshoot of the Roman Catholic Christianity, is only another extension of the clever combination of Greek mythologies, Eastern mysticism and Judaism, designed to lead mankind away from the only, true Yahweh God, and his ordinances and promises (More about it in my next article: Gentiles to Jehovah)! The similarities between the two are very overwhelming! And the differences that are there in basic teachings like salvation through faith, priesthood of all, etc., is outside the purview of Jehovah’s precepts. It’s frightening to realise that these daughter-in-laws of God are in effect worshipping:-

1) the Sun god on Sundays :

Nimrod                                    Ra – Egyptian       Helios – Greek               Roman Sun god          Christ-ian god

The worship of the sun god can be traced all the way back from Catholic Christianity to Nimrod via Romans, Greeks, Egyptians and Babylonians. Nimrod, who was the great grandson of Noah rebelled against Jehovah God and probably initiated the building of the Tower of Babel. After his death he was worshipped as the sun god. The rebellion that he started continued down the ages through various religious practices and philosophical teachings. In the year 46 BC, Roman Emperor Julius Caesar incorporated pagan days into his Julian Calendar. In 325 AD the Roman Empire changed the day of Christian worship to Sunday – the day Egyptian sun god was worshiped. In 1582 AD, Pope Gregory XIII made slight changes to the Julian Calendar and named it the Georgian Calendar. It then went on to become the common world calendar with the help of the British.

The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek Sun god HELIOS, erected in the city of Rhodes on the Greek island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos between 292 and 280 BC. It is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Statue of Liberty: The design, posture and dimensions of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor are based on what the Colossus was thought by engineers in the late 19th century to have looked like. There is a famous reference to the Colossus in the sonnet “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, written in 1883 and inscribed on a plaque located inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

The connect between the ancient statue of Helios in Rhodes Island and the Statue of Liberty in the US is interesting. When you consider the fact that it is this Greek god Helios look-alike structure that reminds Americans of “liberty”, “equal rights”, etc., we can trail the source of these new-age thoughts that have given the world one of the most shattered societies ever – the world capital of modern immorality!

2) god Janus on January 1st ‘midnight’:

The earliest recorded New Year celebrations comes from the ancient Babylonians. The practice of New Year’s resolutions has also been traced to the ancient Babylonians. It is the Romans who began the practice of beginning the year with January 1. This happened somewhere during the 2nd BC, when Jan and Feb were included to the otherwise 10 month long calendar year that started with March.

Janus Bifrons  (Vatican Museum)

In ancient Roman religion and mythology, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions. He is the two-faced god who looks to the future and the past. The Romans dedicated the month of January to Janus. It is perplexing to see even Protestant Christians sit through the past and the future on the night of Dec 31/Jan 1…! Blind to the philosophy behind it?

3) and, above all, Jesus of the NT (who is an adaption of Zeus, the chief of Greek gods!):

Zeus (Greek)                                     Jupiter (Roman)                      Jesus (Christian)                (Museo Pio-Clementino), Vatican.    (Roman King of gods)                     (St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican)

It may be more than just a coincidence that the name “Jesus” resembles “Zeus”, the chief of the Olympian gods. What explanation can be given to the bust of Zeus being erected in a museum in Vatican?! The Roman equivalent to Zeus is god Jupiter. He was endowed with all the noblest elements in human character. He ruled the affairs of men with fatherly benevolence. He rewarded goodness, punished the wicked, and was withal the fountain-head of justice. By a nod of his head he made known his will, and there was no appeal from his decrees – a la Jehovah! During the time of the Greek rule over the Jews, between 330 BC – 166 BC, Antiochus Epiphanes dedicated the temple at Jerusalem to Zues. Thus it is possible that “Jesus” was a Greek attempt to make Jewish inroads.

Conclusion:

With all the facts that are available with us we can conclude that Christ and Christianity were an invention of the Greeks (Acts 11:26And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch – a Greek city – not Jerusalem).  It was later adopted by the Romans who mixed Babylonian and Egyptian paganism to it and made it popular. More recently, the British took its “side-shoots”- Protestant Christianity – out of the European “closet” and spread it through the world. The NT Christ and his teachings are profound and popular, no doubt. Turn the other cheek; walk the extra mile, do unto others what you want others to do to you, etc. are unique and great. But great philosophies cannot reciprocate God or stand between Him and His plans (and remember, other religions too have great teachings that has influenced the society. Like Buddhism). WE HAVE BEEN HANDED DOWN THE LEGACY OF NIMROD. INFACT, ALL RELIGIONS LEAD TO NIMROD – NOT ROME!

When God has set certain perpetual standards that He said He would only change after a certain time (and that time is yet to come), why would I want to believe someone who claims to have come to change it before-time? When provisions for forgiveness of sins and eternal life are already set in place by God Himself, why should I unnecessarily follow a new and different system? God says: LOOK UNTO ME, AND BE YE SAVED, ALL THE ENDS OF THE EARTH; FOR I AM GOD, AND THERE IS NONE ELSE (Isa 45:22). If you ask me, when the Owner of the Company himself has given me the appointment letter, why should I run behind his son?! Huh??

Just like how you would not wish to continue living in a house – inspite of how Beautiful or Big it is – if its Foundations are Found to be False, I find it difficult to believe or follow any teaching or practice that – inspite of how Popular or Pious it is – puts down or resists the scrutiny of its basic source or its foundational truths and tries to defend itself by its own claims. All those who do not wish to be rudely awakened by reality to Face the Fierceness of Facts should continue slumbering in their Faith Fiefdoms. Others… wake up!
